Actually the 4.0 gets better economy by 1mpg city and 2 highway. A much more advanced engine compared to the aging 3.3/3.8 engines. Both the 3.8 and 4.0 get the 6 speed which is nice, but I would opt for the 4.0. Why? Because it gets better fuel economy with having an extra 50hp and more torque as well.

The single overhead cam V6 engine introduced in 1993 was a major advancement for Chrysler. It was derived from Chrysler's first homegrown front-wheel drive V6, the Chrysler 3.3 engine. The SOHC V6 has been replaced by the Chrysler Pentastar engine.. There are three major variants of this basic design: the 3.5 L, 3.2 L, and 4.0 L. Additionally, a 2.7 L DOHC version was derived.

Has anyone else had any engine issues with their 3.8L JK? The original engine had a problem with the oiling system and had oil starvation, leading to total engine failure. I replaced the engine with a new one and there was a problem with a gasket on the engine as well as some issues with the way it matched up to the drivetrain.

The 3.6L V6 is the first of the Pentastar family of motors. It comes as the standard engine in the: Dodge Challenger and Charger, Jeep Grand Cherokee and Wrangler, Ram Promaster and 1500, and Chrysler 300. The Pentastar is optional on both the Dodge Avenger and Chrysler 200.
